The Importance of Knowing That There Are Only Three Days in a Week

Not Seven

By Shaykh 'Abdullaah Al Bukhaaree

After praising Allaah and sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet, the Shaykh ( hafithahullaah) made du'aa that Allaah gives us the baarakaat in our time period, our actions and the places that we are in. Our life span, if it is spent in the disobedience of Allaah ( Subhaanahu Wa Ta'aalaa) then it is useless and upon us is that which is not good. If our life is long and is in obedience to Allaah, then it is that which is good upon good. So, in these times and in these blessed days and nights and that which you came for (the season of Hajj), there are things that every Muslim should remember and ponder upon in order to make them beneficial. Before I (the Shaykh) begin to speak about these affairs that we should all be aware of, I want to go back to that which we began with in the introduction and that is about the life span being spent in the obedience to Allaah. I remembered the hadeeth just now and it is the statement of the Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam): "The best of you are those whose age (or life span) is long and his actions are good."

So, intabih, beware and pay attention to the statement of the Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). He said "his actions are good," not that they are a lot, but good. A lot of people do a lot of actions but they are not done with Ihsaan (they do not perfect them). If we take this hadeeth and put it together with the statement of Allaah in Sooratul Mulk:

"So that WE can test to see which of you are best in action."

So, if you put this hadeeth with the ayah then you understand that the husin - or to do the best deed, that is something that is required from us as it relates to the legislation. For that reason it is said that perhaps the one who has fasted has nothing from his fast but hunger and thirst. Maybe the one who stands at night he has nothing from his standing but tiredness and staying up late. What's the reason for this? It is because he did not perfect his action. The perfection of action is from two different angles.

· Ikhlaas for Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa).

· In accordance to the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

With these two things we find that the action will be perfect, it will be good. If one of them is not present, then the action will not be considered hasan (good), rather it is evil. So, the first thing, the first evil is Shirk Billaahi Ta'aalaa. This is the opposite of Ikhlaas. The second thing is that which opposes the following of the Sunnah and that is following your own desires. So, for that reason, baarakallaahu feekum, the person must race to do the action that is good according to his ability. If the servant of Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa) combines between good actions and a lot of actions he has indeed contained all good. For that reason in the hadeeth of the Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) we find him standing up at night. 'Aaishah (radhiyallaahu 'anhaa) said to him, "O Messenger of Allaah! Isn't it that Allaah forgave you of all your sins? He said, "Shouldn't I be a thankful servant to Allaah?" So, here we find that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam ) combined the good action with doing it a lot.

So, we say that the Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) did a lot of actions and he perfected them. Know for certain and be confident that there's no way to enter the Jannah that I, and you are looking for, and all the people want to enter, except by following the Sunnah of the Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam ). Whoever seeks to enter the Jannah with a way other than the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam ), then know that he will not enter. That is because Allaah said:

"This is My straight path, so follow it and don't follow the other paths that lead astray."

Allaah said:

"Say, this is my way. I call to Allaah upon baseerah (clear and high forms of knowledge), me and those who follow me."

However, as far as those who may follow a way other than the way of Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) in certain things, maybe he makes a mistake in certain aspects. We don't say right away that you are not following the way of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). Rather, every servant himself seeks for the right way but he may not reach it every single time. So, we don't say that this person necessarily is one who intentionally follows a way other than the way of the Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). What we mean here by the one who doesn't enter Jannah because he doesn't follow the way of the Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), that is the one who has kafara bih, he disbelieved in him for he sees it fit not to follow his way. This is what we mean here by not following the way of the Prophet ( sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). So, being it that you came from thousands of miles away to perform Hajj, make sure your actions are hasan (good). I want to remind you after the first reminder that this Hajj for you brothers is an opportunity as we know it is very seldom that they return to you. As 'Abdullaah (from the Salaf rahimahullaah) said," The opportunity goes by very fast and returns very slow. Rather, sometimes it may not return to you at all." When we hear these types of things it makes us understand that it is obligatory on us to take advantage of the opportunity that we have.

Part 2: The Importance of Knowing That There Are Only Three Days in a Week

Not Seven

By Shaykh 'Abdullaah Al Bukhaaree

'Abdullaah (from the Salaf rahimahullaah) said," The fursah (opportunity) goes by very fast and returns very slow. Rather, sometimes it may not return to you at all." When we hear these types of things it makes us understand that it is obligatory on us to take advantage of the opportunity that we have. Meaning, if we let the fursah go by then we have not taken advantage of it. What opportunity is greater than the opportunity that Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa (will) free you from the Hellfire? Allaah, on Yawmul 'Arafah, brags to His Angels, He says to them: "They have come to Me in a state of having disheveled hair, dirty and dusty clothes. What is it that they are looking for? Know and bear witness that I have forgiven them."

Allaah brags to His Angels and says, "Know and bear witness that I have forgiven them." Know and be confident that if Allaah has forgiven you, then you will be from the people of Jannah. For that reason, we understand that to waste this fursah, is absolute stupidity! It shows that the person has a problem in his intellect! That is, there is nothing between you and getting into Jannah except that you obey Allaah. If you are eager in doing that, then that is your reward. So, what is it that stands between you and gaining the Jannah? Don't we see that the one who has wasted this opportunity has wasted a lot of good? Allaah may make it easy for a person to return for Hajj, or He may not. We have to understand that this spirit, your soul, it is not something that you own. It is nothing but your breathing. If the breathing stops, that is it, you die. How many people can we count made Hajj last year and are not here this year? From them is my father – rahmatullaahi 'alaihi - he made Hajj last year, then about one week later he died. I remember when I was going to Hajj last year and my father said to me "make du'aa for me." So, na'am, we see these souls, they come and they go. That's the way the dunyaa is O' brothers, it comes and it goes. So, today it is 'amal , you work and you are diligent in your actions and there is no hisaab (i.e. you are not taken into account) and tomorrow you are going to be taken account of and there will be no action.

The second thing that I wanted to remind the brothers of as well is that you need to know that your days are three types of days, not seven. The days are three days, not seven.

· The first day is the day that went by from your life. You will never be able to bring it back It left with that which was in it from good or evil.

· The second day is the day which is coming and that is tomorrow. You are not guaranteed that you'll live to see it. Who right now can say with absolute certainty that he'll live to see tomorrow? Allaah tells you in the Quraan; "…and there is no soul that knows what will come to it tomorrow..."

· The third day is the day that you are living in right now.

So, what is upon the Muslim right now when he knows that there are only three days?! (The Shaykh reiterated that there are only three days): The day that has left, the day that is coming and the day that he's living in right now. Therefore, it is important for us to take advantage and to use this day to plant your good deeds. So, if this day goes by, it becomes from the other types of days (it becomes yesterday). He will not regret that day because he worked. Why? Because he lived with taa'ah (obedience) to Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa and he took advantage of the day that he is living in. So, you see a man who looks at his past days and he sees that all of them were in obedience to Allaah. That is how the dunyaa is O' brothers – that is how it is. Either you will gain khair (good) or sharr (evil). So, if you find a person who only planted for him self evil, he will look behind himself and only find evil. The one who planted good for himself, he looks back and he sees that good and he becomes happy. This is not something that will lead him to say "Alhamdulillaah I have all of this khair," so that he leaves doing the good. No, rather he races to do more and more good. For this reason we find that Ibn Mas'ood ( radhiyallaahu 'anhu) said; "If you see a person doing evil, then know that the evil has the likes of its kind." The word that he (Ibn Mas'ood) used is akhawaat – that evil deed has akhawaat (sisters). Meaning: the evil that you see is only one thing, so know that it has a bunch of other evils that you do not see. Know, if you see that a person that has some obedience with them, then, know that their obedience has sisters that you do not see. This is because taa'ah (obedience) points to its sisters. Ma'asiyyah (disobedience) to Allaah also points to its sisters. It is a daleel (evidence) of there being other than that. This is from the most beautiful of Ibn Mas'ood's (radhiyallaahu 'anhu) admonitions and exhortations.

To be continued In Shaa Allaah.
