Alims
They take their priests and their anchorites (Alims & Ulamas) to be their lords in substitute of Allah and (they take as their Lord) Christ the son of Mary; Yet they were commanded to worship but one Allah: there is no god but He.
Quran – 9 : 31
Allah says in the Quran, the Christians and Jews have made their Alims and Ulamas and Jesus, Allah (their Gods). When this verse was revealed -
Athee ibn Hathim was a Christian who had come with a large group of Christians and had embraced Islam. When this above Verse was revealed, he came to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) and said:
"Ya Rasoolullah, at no time have we worshipped our Priests and Monks (alims and Ullamas); then why is Allah saying so ???"
To this Prophet (s.a.w) said : "Do you take your Alims words when they say a thing is halaal?"
To this Hathim (r.a) said: "Yes" –
Then the Prophet (s.a.w) said : "Do you take the words of your Priests when they say a thing is Haraam?"
To this also Hathim (r.a) said : "Yes"
Then, Prophet (s.a.w) asked: "Do you clarify as to whether Allah and His Prophet Have said so ??
To this Hathim (r.a) said: "No – we know only what our Alims say"
To this, Rasool (s.a.w) said "this is how you make them Allah for when your Alims and Ulamas say something contradictory to Allah and His Prophet, you obey them blindly without, in the least clarifying, as to whether Allah and His Prophet said it. Then your Alims and Ulamas become the law makers and law givers and you obey them blindly; then it is equivalent to making them Allah".

Friends, this message is not only for the Christians or Jews, it is also for the whole world, especially to the Muslims - Allah is warning us to be careful and not to follow
anyone blindly; Allah and Allah alone has the privilege to formulate religious laws and none other than Him have the authority or audacity to make religious laws; even our Prophet (s.a.w) only declared what Allah said to the people; he never had the authority to make laws; and when someone else makes contradictory laws to Allah's laws and when people follow them blindly, they are indirectly saying that that person too has the authority to make religious laws; then indirectly they are saying that person too is God – Allah. Whenever our Alims and Ulamas say something, make sure to find out as to whether Allah and His Prophet have said so. If you don't and if the Alims say something contradictory to Allah and His Prophet; and you blindly follow them, then you too have made your Alims and Ulamas – ALLAH.
Friends, we should honor the Alims and Ulamas as much as possible. Rasool(s.a.w) said that they are the heirs of Rasool (s.a.w) but he also said my heirs would not be slaves to Dinar or Dirham i.e. to money; they would teach and do amals in the name of Allah alone. It is only the false alims who contradict Allah and His Messenger and by following them, we tend to stray from the righteous path of Allah and His Prophet & it is because of this that so many different sects (groups) exist in Islam. Had the people clarified the statements of the Alims and Ulamas with Quran and Hadees, then under Islam there would have been only Muslims who had accepted Islam in the true sense in the light of Quran and hadees only.
But the people who blindly followed the Alims and Ulamas have now segregated into many many different groups with whom, Allah says, the Prophet (s.a.w) has nothing to do with them in the least. Quran (6:159).
Now, I hope you understand why Mohammed (s.a.w) said : "My Ummah would segregate into 73 groups of which 72 would go to HELL, only one would be coming to PARADISE and that one would be MUSLIMS only."-
Bukhari volume 4 : hadith 403
May Allah help us to be TRUE MUSLIMS who have accepted ISLAM all our lives and help us to enter paradise without any questions being asked. (Ameen).
