Assalaamu Alaikum to All
It
is very important for a Mumin to relate everything that happens to
himself / herself or family to the will of Allaah. Nothing (good or
evil) happens without HIS will. Old saying in Tamil “Not even a speck of
dust or piece of thread could move without HIS permission”. There are
times HE will test us with a challenge or increase an existing
challenge/s. We’d accept this as an opportunity to redeem ourrselves
from sins committed. One should accept the challenges or trials with
patience and seek forgiveness, so that Merciful Allaah will spare us
from punishment in the hereafter. May Allaah’s mercy extend to all of
us.
The Ill Effects of Sins
بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد
1. They knew the reason for their punishment:
Ibn `Aun رحمه الله said:
When Muhammad Ibn Sireen was in debt, he was overwhelmed with grief because of it, and said: I know that this grief is because of a sin which I did 40 years ago.
[Hilyatul Awliyaa (2/271), al-Jaami` li Ahkaam al-Qur’aan (16/31)]
Muhammad Ibn Sireen رحمه الله said: I know the sin because of which I fell in debt. (It was asked): What was it?! He said: 40 years ago I called a man: Yaa muflis (O bankrupted one).
One of the sub-narrators, `Ubaidullaah bin al-Surree said: I informed this narration to Abu Sulaimaan al-Daaraanee (d. 205H) رحمه الله. He said: Because
of their few sins they knew from where it (the punishment) is coming
(i.e. they knew the reason for getting the punishment); but because of
our many sins, we do not know for where it is coming (i.e. we do not
know for which of our sins we are being punished).
[Hilyatul Awliyaa (2/271), Taareekh Damishq (53/226)]
It was said to Abu Sulaimaan al-Daaraanee رحمه الله:
Why is it that the intelligent ones ceased to blame those who offended them? He said: They know that it was Allaah who put them to trials because of their sins.
[al-Aadaab al-Sharee`ah (2/295)]
2. The attitude of those around you changes.
Al-Fudhail bin `Ayaadh رحمه الله said:
I
know that I have disobeyed Allaah when I see the changes in the manners
of my donkey, my servant, my wife and (the atmosphere) in my home.
[Al-Bidaayah wa al-Nihaayah (10/215)]
3. The forgiveness of my Lord is much greater.
Al-Hasan al-Basree رحمه الله said:
We entered upon (the Companion) `Imraan bin Hussain رضي الله عنه; a man said to him: I must ask you about the pain which I see you suffer. `Imraan said: O
my brother! Do not do so. By Allaah! I love to suffer pain; and
whosoever loves it, he is most beloved to Allaah. Because Allaah تعالى says:
{وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُو عَنْ كَثِيرٍ}
{And whatever misfortune befalls you, it is because what your hands have earned. And He (تعالى) pardons much} [Surah Shoora (42):30]
So this is because what I have earned, and the Forgiveness which my Lord has stored for me is more (greater).
[Al-Jaami` al-Ahkaam al-Qur’aan (16/31)]
In another narration it is:
Some of the companions of `Imraan bin Hussain رضي الله عنه entered
upon his while he was suffering from a physical ailment. They said: We
are disheartened by what we see in you (of the suffering). He said: Do not be disheartened by what you see. For what you see is because of a sin, but Allaah تعالى pardons much more (sins than what He punishes for). He then recited the aayah:
{وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُو عَنْ كَثِيرٍ}
{And whatever misfortune befalls you, it is because what your hands have earned. And He (تعالى) pardons much} [Surah Shoora (42):30]
[Tafser Ibn Katheer]
4. And what calamity is greater than forgetting the Qur’aan?!
Al-Dhahaak رحمه الله said:
No person memorizes the Qur’aan and then forgets it except due to the sins that he has committed. Then he recited:
{وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ}
{And whatever misfortune befalls you, it is because what your hands have earned} [Surah Shoora (42):30]
He then said: And what calamity is greater than forgetting the Qur’aan?!
[Al-Jaami` al-Ahkaam al-Qur’aan (16/30)]
5. Reasons for Calamities:
`Alee bin Abu Taalib رضي الله عنه said:
A calamity does not descent except due to a sin, and it is not lifted except with repentance.
[al-Jawaab al-Kaafee (85)]
6. Weakness in the body.
It is reported from Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما that he said:
Righteousness
cause brightness in the heart, illumination in the face, strengthens
the body, increase in provision, and love in the people’s heart.
Whereas sins cause blackness in the face, darkness in the heart,
weakness in the body, reduction in provision, and hatred (against the
sinner) in the people’s heart.
[al-Istiqaamah (1/351), Majmoo` al-Fataawaa (10/630)]
7. This is because of what your sins have inherited.
Al-Fudhail ibn `Ayaadh رحمه الله said:
Whatever
you disapprove/criticize of how the times have changed and the
staleness in brotherhood; this is what you inherit because of your sins.
[Qoot al-Quloob (1/320)]
8. Till when are you going to misuse the blessings of Allaah:
`Amru bin Murrah رحمه الله said:
I had gazed at a woman and she amazed me, and now I have become blind. I hope that this is expiation for it (the sin). And he also said: I do not like that my eye sight is restored because I remember that I gazed at a woman when I was young.
[Hilyatul Awliyaa (5/95)]
9. If you are ever prevented from reciting the Qur’aan, then know it is because of your sins:
Abu Dawood al-Hifree رحمه الله said:
I entered upon Karz bin Wabrah and sat with him while he was weeping. I said to him: What makes you weep? He said: My grief prevented me from reciting (the Qur’aan) last night. And it is but a result of the sin I had committed.
[Hilyatul Awliyaa (5/79)]
10. No wonder why less and less people manage to establish the Qiyaam outside of Ramadhaan:
Sufyaan al-Thawree رحمه الله said:
I was prevented from praying the Qiyaam al-Lail (the night prayers) for 5 months because of a sin I had committed. He was asked: What was that sin? He said: I saw a man crying and I said to myself: This is hypocrisy (showing off).
[Ihyaa `Uloom al-Deen (2/200)]
